  • Long-time local veterinarian Dr. Francis X. Maguire retires from town service in March after 38 years as animal inspector, and passes away later in the year.

  • High school switches to open campus and staggered 9-period schedule to cope with shortage of classroom space.  Schedule is shifted two hours later for Sophomores, who begin the class day at 9:30 AM.
  • First Grade enrollment decreases for the first time in many years, signalling the tail end of Baby Boom wave of students.
  • Fisher School introduces week-long environmental study program at Camp Calumet in New Hampshire, which would become an annual occurrence for decades.
  • Wayne Kivi is named new principal at Bird Elementary School.
  • New teachers include Mary Forester (math), Frost Hubbard (English) and Barry Greener.
