  • The town begins what would become a grueling 7-year fight against the Massachusetts Water Resource Authority (MWRA) plan to use a South Walpole location for disposal of waste bi-product material from the massive Boston Harbor cleanup project.  The proposed site would become colloquially referred to as the Sludge Dump.
  • In parallel, the town also begins to muster opposition to a newly proposed 85 Megawatt Boston Edison power station on South Street
  • The town acquires Turner's Pond (Elm Street / Route 27) and surrounding land with skating lodge
  • The declining school population reaches a generational low of 2,777 students, nearly half the peak student population of 5,073 in 1973.
